Pickup at 9:00 AM from your Rabat hotel, the Rabat-Sale airport, or the Rabat Ville train station. We start at Bab Oudaia, one of the finest Almohad gates in the country, carved in 1195, and step into the Kasbah of the Udayas — a walled hilltop medina above the Atlantic and the Bou Regreg river.
You wander the blue-and-white lanes, with bougainvillea over the walls, and the Andalusian Gardens that exiles from Spain laid out in the 17th century, heavy with orange blossom. We stop for mint tea at the Cafe Maure over the river mouth, with the white town of Sale on the far bank, then walk into the Rabat medina — quieter and more lived-in than Fes or Marrakech, all bakers, herbalists, and weavers.
Lunch is your own choice, and we will point you to the good places: pastilla, lamb tagine with prunes, or fresh fish off the nearby port.
We drive to the Hassan Tower, the unfinished red-sandstone minaret of a 12th-century mosque that, had it been finished, would have been the largest in the world — its columns still stand in rows around it. Next door is the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, where the royal guard stand in red and white; inside is carved cedar, white marble, zellige, and a bronze dome.
We end at Chellah, a single haunting site that holds Phoenician ruins, a Roman city, and a 14th-century Merinid cemetery above the river valley, with storks nesting on the old minaret — about as Rabat as it gets. Drop-off at your hotel, airport, or train station by around 5:30 PM.
