Pickup at 7:00 AM from your Fes hotel or riad. North out of the city into the cork-oak forests and olive groves of the western Rif, about four hours with photo stops, including the bend where Chaouen’s blue cluster first shows between the mountains. We reach Chefchaouen by about 11:00 AM.
Lunch is your own choice — the Rif things: goat cheese, lamb tagine with prunes, fresh khobz. We go in through Bab al-Ain and walk the blue maze to Plaza Uta el-Hammam and its 15th-century Kasbah and walled garden. You wander the famous staircase corners and shop for Rif wool, kilims, babouches, and that Chaouen goat cheese, then climb to the Spanish Mosque for the town laid out blue below, best in the late light, and a last mint tea on a rooftop before we leave around 5:30 PM.
Back through the Rif to Fes by about 9:30 to 10:00 PM.
