Pickup at 6:30 AM from your Rabat hotel or riad — it is a long day, but worth it. North on the highway past Kenitra and Larache, then up into the Rif through cork-oak forest and olive groves, about three and a half hours, until the blue town of Chefchaouen appears on its green hillside, around 10:00 AM.
We go in through Bab al-Ain and walk the blue-washed lanes to Plaza Uta el-Hammam, with its fountain, cafe terraces, and the Grand Mosque minaret. You visit the 15th-century Kasbah and its walled garden, climb its tower for the view, and wander the famous staircase corners and flowerpot alleys.
Lunch is your own choice, and we will recommend, on a rooftop — goat-cheese omelette, lamb tagine with prunes, fresh khobz, and the local Rif goat cheese.
You browse the artisan quarter — handwoven Rif wool, kilims, leather babouches, painted ceramics — where the bargaining is friendly, then walk to the Ras el-Maa waterfall at the top of the medina, where the cold spring that names the town still draws women to rinse their wool. An easy 20-minute climb to the Spanish Mosque gives you the whole blue town from above, best in the late light. A last mint tea on a rooftop before we go.
We leave around 5:30 PM and have you back in Rabat by about 9:00 to 9:30 PM.
