Departure at 8:00 AM from your Marrakech hotel or riad. We drive west toward the Atlantic, stopping at an argan cooperative where Berber women crack and press the nuts by hand — you can taste the oil and buy it at the source. Through the Haha country, where the goats really do climb the argan trees, and into Essaouira by about 10:30 AM.
We start on the Skala ramparts, the 18th-century sea bastions where the Atlantic crashes below and the Iles Purpuraires sit offshore — the North Bastion stood in for Astapor in Game of Thrones. Down at the fishing port you watch the blue boats unload and the open-air market where the restaurants bid for the freshest fish.
Lunch is grilled fish straight off the ice at a port-side spot — sardines, calamari, prawns, the catch of the day. Then we wander the UNESCO medina, the thuya-wood workshops, the old Mellah, and, if there is time, the wide windsurf beach. We leave around 4:00 PM and have you back in Marrakech by about 7:00 PM.
