Pickup at 8:30 AM from your Tangier hotel, riad, or the port. We drive south along the Atlantic to Asilah, the white-and-blue artist town with its Portuguese ramparts and ocean murals, for a seaside walk and lunch, then climb east through the Rif to Chefchaouen. You settle into a blue-city riad, hike up to the Spanish Mosque for sunset over the rooftops, and have a rooftop dinner.

A morning in the blue medina, then south to the Roman ruins of Volubilis — triumphal arch and two-thousand-year-old mosaics out in the farmland — and on to imperial Meknes for the great Bab Mansour gate and Place el-Hedim, reaching Fes by late afternoon.

We give the whole day to Fes el-Bali with a licensed local guide — the Chouara tanneries from the best balcony, the Bou Inania madrasa, the Al-Qarawiyyin (the world’s oldest university), the Royal Palace gates, the Mellah, and the artisan souks — with a rooftop lunch over the green roofs.

South through Ifrane and the Azrou cedar forest, where the Barbary macaques come to the road, then over the Middle Atlas via Midelt and down the palm-deep Ziz Valley. You reach Merzouga in the late afternoon and ride camels into the Erg Chebbi dunes for sunset — tagine, drums, and stargazing at a Berber camp run by people we know.

Sunrise over the dunes, camels back for breakfast, then west via the Rissani souk to the Todra Gorge, where you walk the floor between 300-metre walls, and into the Dades Valley with its famous hairpins.

The Road of a Thousand Kasbahs past the Skoura palm oasis and Ouarzazate to the UNESCO mud-brick citadel of Ait Ben Haddou — the one from Gladiator and Game of Thrones — then over the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260 m) into Marrakech by evening.
