Pickup at 7:00 AM from your Rabat hotel or riad. We drive east about two hours to Meknes, one of the four imperial cities, for a short stop at the great Bab Mansour gate — zellige and marble columns the sultan took from Roman Volubilis. Then on an hour to Fes, where one of our licensed local guides meets you at the medina gate.
We enter the UNESCO Fes el-Bali medina through the blue Bab Boujloud and start at the Bou Inania madrasa (14th century), a Marinid masterpiece of carved stucco and cedar. You wander the artisan souks — the spice market, the silk weavers, the coppersmiths’ quarter where the hammers ring all day, the henna souk under its old plane tree.
Lunch is at a rooftop over the medina — pastilla, rfissa, lamb tagine, and mint tea.
We climb to the best balcony over the Chouara tanneries and their stone dye vats (mint sprig for the smell), see the Al-Qarawiyyin, the world’s oldest university (859 AD), and the jewel-box Al-Attarine madrasa. We pass the seven cedar-and-brass Royal Palace gates and the old Mellah. We leave Fes around 5:00 PM and have you back in Rabat by about 8:00 PM.
