A day out to the Roman ruins of Volubilis — mosaics and the triumphal arch — and imperial Meknes: the Bab Mansour gate, Place el-Hedim, the mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, and the great granaries, back in Fes by evening.

South via Ifrane and the Azrou cedar forest and its macaques, lunch at Midelt, then down the red-rock Ziz Valley to Merzouga in the late afternoon, and a sunset camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes to a Berber camp run by people we know — tagine, drums, stars.

The sunrise from the dunes, camels back, then west via the Rissani souk to the Todra Gorge and its 300-metre walls, and on through the Dades Valley.

West on the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs past Skoura and Ouarzazate to the UNESCO Ait Ben Haddou, then over the Tizi n’Tichka (2,260 m) into Marrakech by evening.

A morning with one of our guides through Marrakech — the Koutoubia, the Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs, the Majorelle Garden, and Jemaa el-Fna — then an afternoon transfer to the airport or the train station.
