Our Meknes Volubilis day trip from Rabat is the most rewarding cultural day-out from Morocco’s capital — an English-guided exploration of two UNESCO-listed sites: the imperial city of Meknes (the “Versailles of Morocco”) and the remarkably preserved Roman ruins of Volubilis.
With a private air-conditioned vehicle and a licensed local guide, this Meknes Volubilis day trip from Rabat covers Bab Mansour, Place el-Hedim, the Royal Granaries of Heri es-Souani, the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, the floor mosaics and triumphal arch of Volubilis, and (time permitting) a brief stop in the holy town of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun. Drive time from Rabat is about 2 hours each way on the modern highway, leaving plenty of time at each site without rushing.
Pickup from your Rabat hotel, the airport, or Rabat Ville train station.
This volubilis day trip + Meknes combo covers two UNESCO sites in one efficient day:
Want to extend to imperial Fes instead? See our Fes Day Trip from Rabat.
Pickup: 8:00 AM from your Rabat hotel, airport, or train station. Drive east on the modern A2 highway for about 2 hours to Meknes — one of Morocco’s four imperial cities and the 17th-century capital of Sultan Moulay Ismail.
Begin at the legendary Bab Mansour — one of the finest gates in North Africa with intricate zellige tilework, carved marble columns repurposed from Roman Volubilis, and Arabic calligraphy inscriptions. Stand on Place el-Hedim — Meknes’ grand central square that mirrors (and predates) Marrakech’s Jemaa el-Fna.
Visit the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail — one of the few mosques/mausoleums in Morocco open to non-Muslim visitors. The interior is a serene masterpiece of cedar muqarnas, zellige, and carved stucco.
Continue to Heri es-Souani — the cavernous Royal Granaries built to feed Meknes’ population and stable Moulay Ismail’s 12,000 horses. The architecture is staggering: vaulted underground halls cooled by an underground water system.
Lunch (own account, recommendations available) at a traditional restaurant in Meknes or the holy town of Moulay Idriss.
Brief drive-by visit of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun — Morocco’s holiest town, founded in 789 AD by Idriss I, the first ruler of Morocco’s first dynasty. Photo stop from the panoramic viewpoint (entry to the mausoleum is restricted to Muslims).
Drive 5 km to Volubilis — Morocco’s best-preserved Roman archaeological site and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With a licensed local guide, explore:
Wander among the ancient columns at golden hour for the most photogenic moment of the day.
Drive back to Rabat (~2 hours). Drop-off at your hotel/riad by approximately 7:30 PM.
