Pickup at 9:00 AM from your Errachidia hotel or the airport. We drive south into the red-rock Ziz Gorge, cut by the river, with photo stops at the viewpoints, then into the Ziz Oasis — over a million date palms running some 70 km down the valley. We stop at Erfoud, the fossil town, and the Rissani souk, birthplace of the Alaouite dynasty, for spices and Saharan crafts.
You reach Merzouga by mid-afternoon and ride camels into the Erg Chebbi dunes for sunset, to a Berber camp run by people we know — tagine, drums, and stars.
Accommodation: desert camp at Erg Chebbi (half board).
The sunrise from the tallest dune, breakfast, camels back. We can stop at Khamlia, the Gnawa village whose people came up from sub-Saharan Africa and kept their own music, before driving north up the Ziz Valley to Errachidia by about 3:00 PM — or onward to Marrakech, Fes, or Ouarzazate.
