Pickup at 11:00 AM from your Errachidia hotel or the airport. We drive south through the Ziz Valley, stopping at the overlook above a million date palms, and at Erfoud, the fossil town, where you can watch 350-million-year-old marine fossils being cut and polished. You reach Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes by mid-afternoon.
Late in the day you mount a camel for the 1.5-hour trek into the dunes as the sand goes from gold to amber to violet, and reach a Berber camp run by people we know — proper en-suite tents, a fire, a tagine dinner, drumming, and a sky thick with stars.
Accommodation: Berber desert camp at Erg Chebbi (half board).
Up before dawn to climb the tallest dune for the sunrise, then breakfast and camels back to Merzouga (sandboarding if you fancy it). We drive north up the Ziz Valley to Errachidia by about 2:00 PM — or, if you are carrying on, we can drop you in Ouarzazate, Fes, or Marrakech.
