Tour Details — Tangier City Tour

Our private Tangier City Tour offers an immersive Moroccan experience. Tangier is where the Morocco Desert Discovery first met travelers stepping off the boat from Spain — and it is still the city we love showing you first. This full-day Tangier city tour is a private, guided walk through Morocco’s gateway to Europe with one of our own local guides: the medieval Tangier medina, the cliff-top Kasbah, the busy Grand Socco, the mythical Caves of Hercules, and Cape Spartel, where the Atlantic Ocean actually meets the Mediterranean Sea.

Climb to the Kasbah and, on a clear morning, you can pick out Tarifa in Spain across the Strait of Gibraltar. Out at Cape Spartel the air smells of salt and wild fennel; at the Caves of Hercules the sea has carved an opening shaped like Africa. We drink mint tea poured high on a rooftop the way we do at home, and our driver knows the lanes the big tour buses cannot reach. Pickup is from your Tangier hotel, riad, port, or cruise terminal.

This is the Tangier we grew up in — Phoenician, Berber, Andalusian, a little Spanish, and proudly Moroccan. Want to add the Blue City? Pair it with our Tangier to Chefchaouen day trip, or keep going south on the 5-day Tangier to Marrakech desert tour.

Highlights of the Tangier City Tour

Itinerary — Tangier City Tour Day Schedule

Morning: Kasbah Museum → Tangier Medina → Grand Socco

Pickup at 9:00 AM from your Tangier hotel, riad, port, or cruise terminal. We start high up at the Kasbah of Tangier, the old clifftop citadel; on a clear morning you can see straight across the Strait of Gibraltar to Spain. Inside the former Sultan’s palace, the Kasbah Museum (Dar el-Makhzen) sits around a quiet Andalusian-Moorish courtyard, with rooms that walk you from Phoenician through Roman and Moorish Tangier.

Then we drop down into the medina through the old Bab el-Assa gate and let you wander the narrow lanes — whitewashed walls, those famous blue doors, and the Petit Socco, the little square where Paul Bowles, William Burroughs, Tennessee Williams and Jack Kerouac used to sit during the International Zone years.

We come out at the Grand Socco (Place du 9 Avril 1947), the busy square between the old town and the Ville Nouvelle, with its tiled fountain, its palms, and the gate into the Mendoubia Gardens.

    Lunch: a Tangier table

Lunch is your own choice, and we will point you to the good places: tangia, the slow-cooked Tangier lamb the men leave to cook in the hammam embers; a fresh seafood pastilla; or just a grilled-sardine sandwich from a medina vendor, eaten standing up the way we do.

Afternoon: Caves of Hercules → Cape Spartel → Hercules Beach

We drive 14 km west along the Atlantic to the Caves of Hercules, where the legend says Hercules rested before going after the golden apples of the Hesperides. The sea has worn an opening in the rock shaped almost exactly like Africa — it is the photo everyone takes.

A little further is Cape Spartel, the northwest corner of the whole African mainland, where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean. We stop at the 1864 lighthouse and look across to Tarifa in Spain, only 14 km off.

A quick stop at Hercules Beach for photos and, in season, a walk on the sand (there are camels here if you want the picture).

    Late afternoon: back to Tangier

We head back, with an optional stop at the Tangier American Legation — the oldest American property abroad and the only US National Historic Landmark outside the country. Drop-off at your hotel, riad, or the port by around 5:30 PM.

If this is the Tangier you want to see, send us a message — we will build the day around you, and the mint.
