Departure: 7:30 AM pickup from your Fes hotel or riad.
Your fes desert trip begins with a scenic drive south across the Middle Atlas Mountains. Stop in Ifrane — the Alpine-styled university town nicknamed “Little Switzerland” — for coffee and photos with its famous stone lion. Continue to the Azrou Cedar Forest to walk among ancient Atlas cedars and meet troops of wild Barbary macaques (the only wild primates north of the Sahara).
Onward to Midelt for a traditional Berber lunch in the foothills between the Middle and High Atlas. The road then plunges south through the breathtaking Ziz Valley Gorge — a red-rock canyon lined with hundreds of thousands of date palms. Pause at the panoramic Ziz viewpoint for what may be the best photograph of your whole trip.
Arrive in Merzouga in the late afternoon at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes — some over 150 meters tall. Meet your camel team and embark on a 1.5-hour sunset camel trek deep into the dunes, watching the sky shift from gold to violet.
Reach your luxury Berber desert camp — private tents with proper beds and en-suite bathrooms, a central bonfire, and a candlelit dining area. Enjoy a traditional tagine dinner followed by Berber drumming and storytelling around the fire. Step outside before bed for an unforgettable stargazing session.
Accommodation: Luxury Berber camp, Erg Chebbi (dinner & breakfast included).
Early morning: Wake before dawn for the sunrise over the Sahara — climb the tallest dune behind camp (or ride your camel) and watch the first light set Erg Chebbi on fire. Back at camp, enjoy a leisurely breakfast and freshen up.
Ride your camels back to Merzouga village. Optional add-ons before departure: sandboarding, a 4×4 desert circuit visiting the Gnawa music village of Khamlia and a nomad family, or a quad-bike ride across the dunes.
