Tour Details of 2 Days Zagora Desert Tour from Marrakech

If you only have two days but want real desert, Zagora is the answer. Our Zagora desert tour from Marrakech is a private 2-day run over the High Atlas to the edge of the Sahara, with a night at a Berber camp in the Draa Valley. From Marrakech you cross the Tizi n’Tichka pass, stopping at the UNESCO kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate on the way.

The road follows the Draa, the longest river in Morocco, past mile after mile of date palms to Zagora and the old caravan signpost marked Timbuktu, 52 days. A short camel ride takes you out to camp for a tagine, drums round the fire, and a night under the desert sky before the drive back. It is the quickest honest taste of the Sahara from Marrakech.

Have more time? The dunes at Merzouga are taller — see our 3-day Marrakech to Merzouga tour.

Day-by-Day 2-Day Zagora Desert Tour From Marrakech

    Day 1Marrakech → Tizi n'Tichka → Ait Ben Haddou → Draa Valley → Zagora (7 hours drive)

Departure at 8:00 AM from your Marrakech hotel or riad. We set off climbing south towards the majestic High Atlas Mountains, winding through lush green valleys, old earth-colored Berber villages, and switchback curves until we reach the famous Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260 m). We’ll pause at spectacular viewpoints to enjoy hot mint tea and take in the panoramic mountain peaks before descending the southern slopes.

Our journey leads us to the legendary fortified village of Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a stunning example of southern clay architecture, famously featuring in films like Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, and Game of Thrones. After walking the narrow alleys and climbing to the granary for a view over the river, we enjoy a local lunch. We then drive past Ouarzazate and through the spectacular Draa Valley—Morocco’s longest palm grove, lined with ancient adobe ksour and millions of date palms. By late afternoon, we reach the rocky desert of Zagora. Here, you will mount camels for a memorable sunset ride through the dunes as the sky fades to gold and amber, arriving at our traditional Berber desert camp. Enjoy a hot tagine dinner, share stories around the campfire, and sleep under a sky thick with stars.

Accommodation: Berber desert camp, Zagora (dinner and breakfast).

    Day 2Zagora → Ouarzazate → Tizi n'Tichka → Marrakech (7 hours drive)

We wake you early before dawn to witness a peaceful desert sunrise, watching the first light paint the rocky plains and dunes in orange and red. After a traditional breakfast at the camp, you will ride the camels back to Zagora (or return by 4×4) to meet your driver. We begin our drive back, stopping in the historic town of Ouarzazate, known as the “Hollywood of Africa”. We stop for a photo in front of the impressive 19th-century Taourirt Kasbah and can optionally visit the famous Atlas Film Studios.

We head back north across the High Atlas via the Tizi n’Tichka pass, stopping at a local argan oil cooperative run by Berber women, where you can see how the nuts are cracked by hand. We arrive back at your Marrakech hotel or riad by around 7:00 PM. When you are ready to experience the desert with us, send us a message—we will set it up around you.
