Escape the heat and hustle of Marrakech with a refreshing day trip to the High Atlas Mountains. Just an hour from the city, you’ll discover a completely different Morocco — verdant valleys, cascading waterfalls, traditional Berber villages, and panoramic mountain views. This day trip is perfect for nature lovers, hikers, and anyone who wants to experience authentic rural Berber life and breathtaking mountain scenery without an overnight stay.
This Atlas Mountains Day Trip packs an incredible variety of experiences into just one day:
Departure: 9:00 AM from your Marrakech hotel/riad
Morning: Drive south from Marrakech into the Ourika Valley — a lush, green corridor at the foot of the High Atlas. Stop at an Argan oil cooperative where Berber women demonstrate the traditional process of extracting oil from argan nuts. Continue to a traditional Berber house for an authentic cultural experience — learn how families live, see their handicrafts, and enjoy Berber mint tea on a rooftop terrace with mountain views.
Midday: Arrive at Setti Fatma, the starting point for a scenic hike to the waterfalls. A guided hike (approximately 45–60 minutes) takes you along the river and through rocky trails to reach the first two of the seven cascades. The route is suitable for most fitness levels with local guides available.
Lunch: Enjoy a traditional Moroccan lunch at one of the charming riverside restaurants in Setti Fatma — tagine, bread, and salad with your feet practically in the mountain stream.
Afternoon: On the return drive, stop at additional viewpoints and optionally visit the Anima Garden — a stunning botanical paradise created by Austrian artist André Heller.
Arrival: Back in Marrakech by approximately 5:00 PM.
